Common Travel Troubles

We know there are a million and one things that can happen on your trip and each one is slightly different to the next, so here is some information about what to do in these everyday situations.

My bags haven't arrived

Lost luggage is a surprisingly common phenomenon. Nowadays most airlines electronically tag all bags, and even if they get put on the wrong flight, they'll usually find their way to your hotel in 24hrs. In most cases, once it does arrive, a courier service will deliver it from the arrival airport to you at your hotel with delivery charges paid by the airline.

The first thing to do when your luggage doesn't turn up on the carousel is to find an airline representative or the lost baggage desk and tell them. They'll fill in a lost baggage report. Try to give them as much information about your bag and be accurate with your forwarding address. You must get a lost luggage report and this document normally carries the contact details so that you can check the progress of the search.

Travel Insurance Direct policies include a benefit that pays for immediate necessities after you have had a delay lasting more than 12 hours to tide you over until your bags arrive. Warning: don't go and buy that $4,000 Gucci suit and a Dior toothbrush because TID won't consider that a necessity. Remember, if you act like you haven't got insurance, you'll be treated fairly.
My bags have been stolen

It happens every day … but your lucky since TID has generous baggage cover.

First things first - report it to the Police (or if for some reason this isn't possible, get a written report from some other officially recognised authority).

Then you'll need to replace your things that you need to allow you to keep travelling. Remember that insurers will want proof of ownership and the value of the things you lost together with official details of the incident for when they come to pay a claim. If you passport has also been stolen, you'll need to make arrangements with the nearest New Zealand consulate service for replacement before you can travel. Airlines will be able to provide replacement tickets once they have your proof of identity.
I am at the hospital. What happens next?

This one's easy: call the emergency assistance hotline number.

They'll talk to everyone including doctors in your hospital, your family and your local doctor if required to make sure you get the best treatment. Our assistance company deals with thousands of cases every year all around the world and stop dramas becoming crises.

Sometimes it'll be better for you to rest and have treatment where you are in which case TID may arrange for a flight for a family member to come and stay with you. If it's necessary we'll arrange to bring you home.

I need to talk to a doctor

My flight has been cancelled

Talk to the airline - many of them have good arrangements to look after you and will probably re-route your flight.
