Questions and Answers

Below are the most commonly asked questions about our travel insurance. If you don't find an answer to your question, please contact our friendly Customer Service Centre.

  • Are my children automatically covered under my single or family policy?
Yes, they are! Provided they are under 21 years of age at the date of policy issue, not in full time employment, travelling with you on the trip and listed on your Certificate of Insurance, your children and/or grandchildren are automatically covered under both a single or family policy. You will be asked during the purchase process if any dependents are travelling with you - if this is the case please select the number of dependents, and enter their names and dates of birth in the relevant sections.
  • Can I extend a policy while I am overseas?
Yes, you can extend anytime before your policy expires. You will need to phone us +61 2 8263 0483 between 10am-10pm weekdays and 12pm-4pm weekends (NZ local time). You will need to provide credit card details for payment of the extension and we will then email you the Certificate of Insurance for the extension period.
  • Can I extend a policy via email?
Unfortunately not. We do not keep your credit card details on file so if an additional premium is payable, you need to call us to provide your card details again. You should never email your credit card details to anyone as email is not secure.
  • When does my policy start?
One of the benefits of purchasing online is that you are instantly covered for cancellation (conditions apply). The rest of your policy benefits applies from the start date on your Certificate of Insurance.
  • Who can buy a policy?
TID products are available to permanent residents of New Zealand travelling anywhere in the world. You don’t need to start your journey in NZ!
  • What's the definition of a permanent resident?
You need to be legally defined as a permanent resident of New Zealand and eligible to receive long term medical treatment here (in case you’re repatriated in a medical emergency) to be able to buy this policy.
  • Can I buy a policy if I am over 70?
Yes, you can! Cover is available to travellers aged up to 85 years old.
  • When will I receive my policy documentation?
Once you have bought a policy, you will receive a confirmation email from us that will include your Certificate of Insurance and a copy of the Product Disclosure Statement. Please note however that some email accounts (eg Hotmail) will treat the confirmation as spam so if you don’t see the email in your inbox, be sure to check your junk mail just in case.
  • How far in advance can I buy a policy?
You can buy an International or Domestic policy with TID up to 12 months before you’re due to depart. For Annual Multi Trip policies, you can buy up to 30 days in advance.
  • How much does a policy cost?
It all depends on where you’re going, how long you’re going for, how many of you there are and your age. Go through our quick and easy online quote process for prices, or call our customer service team on 0800 843 843.
  • Can I buy out the policy excess?
The policy excess means that if you make a claim, we deduct the first $100. If you don't want to have to pay an excess in the event of a claim, simply tick the excess buyout box when you buy a policy and pay an extra $25.
